Euthanasia

How will I know when it's the right time or that I'm doing the right thing?

The only person who can answer that question is you. As the owner, guardian and companion of your pet you will know when your pet is ready. There are some questions you can ask yourself to help guide in your decision making. Is my pet in pain and is he/she suffering? How has my pet's quality of life changed? Are they still eating and drinking? Are they able to control their bowels or bladder? Do they show any interest at all in the things that once gave them enjoyment? If you are thinking that it may be time to put your pet to sleep, please feel free to call our office. Our staff is always available to talk to you about this important decision. You may also make an appointment with a doctor to discuss whether it's the right time or not.

What happens when you put my pet to sleep? Will it hurt?

The word 'euthanasia' literally means "good death". When your pet is euthanised an injection is given directly into the blood stream where it will reach the heart almost immediately. In essence, the injection is an overdose of anesthesia, so your pet simply drifts off to sleep. They are unconscious before the body systems stop so that they do not feel any pain. Some choose to be with their pet during this time, in which case the pet will be taken to the back for a few minutes so that a catheter may be placed into the vein before the injection is given. Others may not be able to be present during the injection. In this case, the pet is taken to the back for the injection, where our compassionate technicians lovingly stroke your pet and speak softly to them while the drug takes effect.

What will happen to my pet afterward?

We offer two different types of cremation services. If you choose, your pet can be cremated and the ashes can be returned to you. Keep in mind, however that there is a substantial cost difference for this service. The other option is that your pet will be cremated with others and the ashes scattered on lovely property in the foothills.
