Routine exams and vaccines

Keeping your pet in good health involves many things. Treatment of illness is most effective with early detection of the problem. Yearly exams are important in detecting any potential problem before it goes too far. In fact, the American Veterinary Medical Association is now recommending twice yearly exams.

Heartworm preventative is an important issue in veterinary medicine. More and more dogs are being tested positive and the treatment can sometimes be fatal. Prevention is the key to combating this deadly parasite. Heartworm is actually passed to your dog or cat by the bite of a mosquito. It can take 6 months after the initial bite for the heartworm to be detectable by your veterinarian. A simple blood test can be performed and the results are available in as little as 10 minutes. A heartworm test should be performed once a year, and can be ran at the time of the yearly exam. Heartworm prevention should be administered to your pet once a month and comes in several different forms, each of which can be easily given by you at home.

Dogs and cats over the age of 7 are considered seniors. Our older pets need a little more medical attention than a younger pet to help maintain their health and vitality. In addition to the yearly exams and staying current with vaccines and parasite control, bloodwork should be done at least once a year. Early detection of many diseases is the key to battling illness. Blood tests should be performed that include chemistry values, thyroid levels and a complete blood count. The chemistry values take a look at the function of several major organs, including liver and kidney and can help detect a problem long before your pet ever shows signs of illness.
