Sisters Animal Sanctuary

Sisters Animal Sanctuary

SISTERS ANIMAL SANCTUARY (SAS)

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE ANIMALS

Our Mission:  To assist animals by providing a place of refuge and protection and to arrange for good homes when possible.

Our Goal:  To build a permanent life, no-kill animal sanctuary and help stop the overpopulation of animals through spay/neuter programs and public education.

History/Background:  We are two sisters with a passion for animals and their welfare. We began our journey in August of 2003 and are committed to helping those animals that have been abused, forgotten, overbred, and generally overlooked by people who don't take responsibility for their animals. During this time, we have helped countless cats by trapping, testing, spay/neutering and, where possible, finding them very good homes.  Unfortunately, we have also had to euthanize several cats due to highly contagious diseases including feline leukemia (FeLV), feline AIDS (FIV), and feline infectious peritonitis (FIP).  This is never an easy decision and is always heartbreaking.

Services Provided:

Feral (Wild) Cats - Feeding feral (wild) cat colonies throughout the Sacramento area, but primarily in Elk Grove.  These are the cats that have been dumped and/or abused by humans and left to fend for themselves and have become wild due to lack of human contact.  They are a sad story since they usually cannot be made human friendly even over time.  Our primary objective in this area is to trap them in animal friendly traps, take them to the vet for testing of contagious diseases, vaccinate, spay/neuter and release to their previous environment if we cannot find another suitable location.  Once we have a facility, these cats will be taken in under the Sanctuary and live out their lives in a safe and healthy environment appropriate for their temperament.

Friendly Cats – These are the cats that have lost their way or have been dumped by their owners and left to fend for themselves.  The difference between feral and friendly cats is that once they have been tested and cleared of contagious diseases, spay/neutered and vaccinated we foster them and find them very good homes.  We have developed an extensive Adoption Form that helps us make the decision if the adopted family is a good match.  We have a bulletin board in Laguna Creek Veterinary office where we put their pictures along with their stories to assist us in finding them homes.

Dogs – As we find them, we rescue them and try to find their owners.  If that fails, we try to find very good homes based on the dog’s temperament and the adopted family’s lifestyle.  We do plan on having kennel facilities in the sanctuary that will allow us to house dogs in a great environment and find them wonderful homes.

Education – We do not have a formal procedure for education at this time.  However, we walk the walk and talk the talk at every opportunity and just in passing.  In the future, we will provide educational materials about animal/pet topics, but we do not have the funds to support this at this time.

Partnerships - We have partnered with Laguna Creek Veterinary Hospital  They have also provided us with a bulletin board to display our adoptable animals and help us find them great homes.  In addition, they do not charge us for room and board so we can keep kittens and cats in the vet clinic for a few weeks which helps us find them homes since they bring them out to meet the public.  We plan to contact more veterinarians in the future to provide similar services. who helps us by giving us discount rates on vaccinations and spay/neuter.

We have also partnered with other rescue groups and always try to share our resources like extra food, traps, etc.  We hope to expand this partnership as time goes on because we are in it for the animals not for personal gain.
